Construction of 2nd Stage of Western City Ring Road in Plzeň
The city ring road in the Křimická–Karlovarská section in the western part of Plzeň connected the largest industrial zone in Borská Pole with large housing estates in the northern suburbs and also relieved traffic in the city centre.
Basic information
Project Investor:
Highway Administration and Maintenance in Plzeň Region, Plzeň City
Project Designer:
TUBES spol. s r.o. and V-CON, spol. s r.o.
Project Duration:
04/2020 – 03/2023
Characteristics
The contract consisted of the construction of almost 3.5 km of two-lane highway. Its main part was a 1.2 km long flyover over the Mže River valley. Almost 1 km (expansion parts A and B) of its length was constructed on a sliding frame and approximately 200 m (expansion part C) was constructed using cantilever concreting. In addition to the flyover, the construction included 3 intersections, 4 road bridges, 3 biocorridors, 5 noise barriers, paths for pedestrians and cyclists, a six-arm roundabout and 2 off-grade intersections. Metrostav’s facilities produced and delivered three quarters of all the necessary reinforcement.

- 500 000 m3Volume of excavated soil
Uniqueness of Structure
The superstructure of the flyover above the Mže River was made using cantilever concreting and the arms were connected at a height of about 20 m above the water level. During construction, COVID broke out, so it was adversely affected not only by anti-epidemic measures, but also by the lower availability of materials and their higher prices. Later, the war in Ukraine resulted in a worker shortage. The construction project was complicated by clouds of dust and the ubiquitous mud after rain, due to the nature of the soil and the extensive earthworks.
