Adam's ambition was to be a professional soccer player. Everything in his life revolved around soccer, including his choice of secondary school. Unfortunately, Adam contracted Lyme disease, which spelled the end of his sports career. Adam signed up for Metrostav's scholarship program and began to realize that he liked the construction trade. After graduating, he began working as a mason in the manufacture of high-precision concrete tunnel lining components for the Ejpovice Railway Tunnel. "I've become a construction worker by accident. But now, years after choosing this profession, I'm glad that Metrostav gave me a chance to pursue this line of work." &nbsp;After the completion of the Ejpovice tunnel project, Adam spent two years on the construction of a tunnel in Prešov as a tunnel boring worker.&nbsp; "First, I was uneasy about whether the old-timers would accept me and how I'd fit in, but my concerns proved unfounded. My coworkers were great, and I mean it. They accepted me as one of their own, and I made new friends, even though some are a generation older." &nbsp;Adam has grown fond of working in construction and decided to pursue further studies. He has obtained a secondary school diploma in civil engineering, and is now in his third year of a university program specialized in economics and management.&nbsp; Adam's current position is foreman. After spending several months in Germany working on a project executed by the subsidiary Subterra a.s., he is now back with Metrostav, taking part in a project optimizing railway tracks connecting Prague Hostivař and Prague Main Railway Station.

“If you want to work on interesting projects, Metrostav is the right choice. I had the opportunity to build Blanka.”Most students in civil engineering want to work on large and technologically unique projects. Jirka got this opportunity right after finishing school when he joined Metrostav as a technician in a project team for the construction of the Blanka tunnel. He was responsible for the preparation of the Troja part of the construction and subsequently for its implementation as project manager.“Relatively shortly after school, I got to see the whole spectrum of construction activities. I worked with designers, investors, and suppliers on the largest tunnel project in Central Europe. It was exciting.”After completing the project, Jirka was looking for another challenge. His dream was to solve non-traditional implementations. That is why he decided to focus on the energy sector, specifically nuclear power plants, and to build operations specialized in this specific segment. And he succeeded – thanks in part to his team, Metrostav has obtained certificates that authorize the company to carry out construction works in the strict mode to which nuclear power plants are subject. Jirka shares his experience with students at his alma mater, the Faculty of Civil Engineering at VŠB-TU in Ostrava.“During my studies, I gained the best skills and knowledge from teachers that had previously worked in practice. Maybe it’s out of nostalgia, but I feel I should return the favor to the faculty. I am pleased to be able to pass on my experience, and not only to my current colleagues, but also to those who may one day become my colleagues.”

"At Metrostav, once you prove your worth, your path to growth is wide open."Tomáš has been around water since his childhood – he is the third generation of water management experts in his family. When the time came to decide his future career, water management was the clear choice. He joined Metrostav on a part-time basis while still studying. "The company approached me when I was still in school. I was working on a thesis about a dam in Kurdistan, which probably caught their attention."&nbsp;Tomáš started as a foreman overseeing the construction of a small hydroelectric power station in Litoměřice, which included the first of a large number of fish ladders he has since built. Afterward, he took part in an extraordinary project to build a small hydroelectric plant in Štětí, where he first worked as Assistant Site Manager and later as Assistant Project Manager."I was in charge of installing equipment supplied by Austrian subcontractors. My job was to act as a liaison officer coordinating construction and installation work. All communication was in English. It was quite a challenge and a great experience."Tomáš's first undertaking as Project Manager was the reconstruction of a weir in Podělusy. He is now managing several projects simultaneously. They include renovating the Hubálov Weir on the Jizera River and renovating overflow surfaces and sluice structures at the Kadaň Water Works. His pride and joy is a project consisting of rebuilding the boat elevator at the Orlík Dam."I'm happy to be part of Metrostav. The company is the undisputed leader in building water infrastructure, and I've learned a lot from my colleagues, experienced experts, who are now my friends. My professional dream is to be able to build a dam – either in the Czech Republic or abroad."

"What do I appreciate the most about Metrostav? The varied nature of structures the company builds and the positions it offers. Being able to try out different tasks and find out what I really enjoy doing. The readiness of colleagues to help and share their experience. The friendly, accommodating attitude with which they accepted me as part of the team."Already when attending elementary school, Adéla liked math and geometry. In sixth grade, she was one of the few who knew what she wanted to do in the future – study civil engineering. Which she went on to do. Her choice of university was clear. She selected civil engineering at the Czech Technical University, later opting for a major in the planning, execution, and operation of construction projects. While enrolled, she considered an internship and took advantage of Metrostav's offer, joining the firm's Division 8 in her second year.&nbsp;"On the job, I can see how things are done in the real world, which helps me in my studies. You see everything in a completely different light, which goes for the technology itself, construction methods, workers' abilities, and the time work tasks take to complete."&nbsp;She appreciates the time flexibility and the fact that her colleagues are happy to give advice and understand that she occasionally needs to take a day off to study for exams. They too started when they were still studying and remember how difficult it was to work at the same time.&nbsp;"Nearly everything you do and see is for the first time. Luckily, there are people who are happy to help, demonstrate, explain, and share their knowledge. I am forever grateful to them for that."&nbsp;In her free time, Adéla likes sports. She plays competition floorball. Time permitting, she hikes through the mountains and gets together with family and friends. Her goal is to successfully complete the program and gain as much worksite experience as possible to put into use during future construction projects.

"I like working in an industrious environment. At the same time, I find it fulfilling to look back and see that I've been part of building something of lasting value. There are few lines of work as satisfying as construction in this regard."&nbsp;Throughout his life, Lukáš has had a passion to build and create. Having joined Metrostav in 2006, he started out as a planning assistant during the Dům u Zlatého Anděla Project on Celetná Street in Prague. Subsequently, he was assigned to the CITY TOWER reconstruction and enlargement in the Pankrác District in Prague. That venture convinced him to stay on with Metrostav. "In my eyes, Metrostav is the only company capable of executing such an extensive contract with so much aplomb."&nbsp;Another great experience Lukáš has gained was his assignment to the construction of the Sacre Coeur II Residence. Owing to its exceptional location above the Strahov Tunnel, this residential complex is a unique achievement among Czech housing development ventures. “This project has produced a team of extremely hardworking individuals who will make Metrostav prosper for years to come. I consider that to be the biggest reward for our joint efforts. Later, all of us together managed to complete the third stage of this project and, at the same time, to build the foundations for the NoeGRAF venture.”&nbsp;Lukáš is currently the project manager responsible for overseeing the team executing the TOP Rezidence Na Pomezí project in Prague's Košíře District. "Here, I can put into use what I've learned from my colleagues who guided me in the past and taught me how to do this demanding work."&nbsp;Thanks to the responsibility assigned to him, Lukáš has learned to make independent decisions and to coordinate individual sub-processes. "Without their support, I could not become a project manager at such a relatively young age.""In our line of work, success means to be always prepared and to expect trouble. As recently as 10 years ago, the biggest portion of Czech GDP was generated by the construction industry. Today, I encounter disrespect for the entire sector, while nobody from the outside can imagine the amount of work, time, and attention needed to complete a construction project. My dream is that the day will come when construction workers are respected once again, and that the structures we build will be prosperous and serve people well."&nbsp;Lukáš spends his free time raising his children, as he considers family the main purpose of life.

"It makes me happy to see that all of us are progressing as a team toward a mutually shared goal. I'm truly grateful to be able to go to work every day, not because I have to, but because that's what I want to do."Dana joined Metrostav in 2013 as an assistant to the Construction Site Manager for the project "Pasohlávky Thermal Resort – Technical and Transport Infrastructure". Apart from working in the office, Dana's coworkers brought her along on daily construction site inspections. Thanks to that, she was able to get a taste of actual construction work. Over time, Dana continued working on various projects as a bid manager, but she was drawn away from the office. &nbsp;Dana wanted to be part of the hustle and bustle on the construction site, to deal with the various issues encountered there. That's what she enjoys and what she finds fulfilling. Hence, when she was presented with the opportunity to work as a construction site manager, she did not hesitate for a second.&nbsp;"My present position is Construction Site Manager. All aspects of my work are rewarding, namely being part of the building process from the very beginning, from the time construction gets under way, throughout the execution stage, until the structure is finished and delivered to the client."&nbsp;Individual projects allow Dana to keep growing. She learns new things during every new construction job, reviews her newly acquired knowledge upon completion, evaluates the outcome, learns from any mistakes that might have been made, and uses the experience thus gained and the expertise in her work on the next project. Even though this cycle keeps repeating unchanged, every project surprises her with something new.&nbsp;"What I value the most at work are my colleagues and everyone who takes part in the projects we execute. I hope that the environment around me will continue to be as inspiring as it has been thus far and that I'll have the opportunity to be part of projects involving the kind of interesting structures that Metrostav builds."

Ing. Dana Klaudová

Tomáš hails from Ústí nad Labem, where Metrostav has a partnership with the local Secondary School of Construction Engineering, which includes an apprentice scholarship program. Tomáš signed up for the program at the age of 15, and began working on Metrostav's worksites while studying as part of the hands-on training. He joined the company on a full-time basis immediately after graduating as a metalworker. His first assignment was the metalworking shop in Division 5 in Prague."I liked that I was earning money while studying, and I knew that I would have a job after getting my diploma. Incidentally, I learned to use hand tools at school, but here, we use machines for everything. It's a completely different ballgame."When Tomáš later decided to return to his home region, he looked for a position within Metrostav in Northern Bohemia and accepted an offer from the regional branch of Division 8 in Ústí nad Labem. He has taken advantage of the opportunity to improve his qualifications, and has completed a number of courses, earning a certificate for electrode and carbon dioxide welding and a permit to operate a forklift."I like it when I pass by something we have built. It feels good knowing that I was a part of it. Among many other projects, I took part in the construction of a swimming pool at Klíše in Ústí nad Labem, which I now regularly visit. I did almost all of the handrails, so I know each of the welds. It's awesome to see the work behind me and to know that it serves so many people."

"My ambition was to specialize in BIM* and to use it not only in the design process, but in actual construction as well. I was lucky, because this is precisely what Metrostav has given me the opportunity to do."Filip encountered BIM for the first time during a visit to the USA, where this technology was already widely used. While looking for opportunities to pursue his interest in BIM, Filip's thesis supervisor offered him an internship at Metrostav.During his thesis studies, Filip tackled a topic on which he worked on the job, specifically the adaptation and benefits of digitizing records using BIM during the construction process.After earning a Master's degree at the Czech Technical University, Filip joined Metrostav on a full-time basis. Soon, he became a member of a working party tasked with improving the conditions for BIM deployment in the Czech Republic. Filip has attended conferences in Austria and Germany, where BIM use is a step ahead of others. Considering the fast pace of technological development, he is happy to be in the thick of the current goings-on to be able to flexibly respond to every new innovation. &nbsp;Filip is presently the Head of the Digitization of Construction Processes at Metrostav's head office. He manages a small team that supports the BIM technology throughout the company to provide Metrostav with all of the means, tools, and know-how needed for planning, pricing, and executing contracts using construction models. His responsibilities include overseeing the digitization of Metrostav's internal processes.In addition, Filip is working on several projects executed with the use of BIM technology. One of these jobs consists of a novel way of using BIM during the remodeling of Hotel InterContinental in downtown Prague. &nbsp;"In my view, Metrostav's most important advantage is the fact that it is a Czech company. We don't have to adopt unnecessary internal regulations drafted in some far away overseas location, which make no sense locally.
